Women's Hair Removal
FAQ's
Before starting treatment, we analyse the characteristics of the client’s skin and hair in order to
select the most effective parameters. The treatment consists of the application of a very precise form
of light energy, which targets the root of the hair.
Above all, the guarantee of specialisation. The experience of knowing the areas that are difficult to
treat, as well as developing solutions to improve treatment results, generates an area of knowledge
and experience that makes Clínica do Pêlo one of the leading companies in laser hair removal in
Portugal. Our goal is to have the maximum knowledge about hair removal, how to approach it,
present solutions, and simultaneously use the best technology currently available on the market.
This gives us the ability to offer our customers the most effective hair removal treatment and
customise it for each person according to their skin and hair type.
Specialised technicians that set the guidelines to be followed through personalised control and that
guarantee the client’s safety and well-being. The technician determines the type of laser to be used
based on the characteristics of the skin, hair, and the area to be treated. The laser is always used to
ensure the treatment is both effective and safe.
Since each person is different, it is necessary to make a correct identification in all situations,
overcoming potential challenges in advance to achieve the best results. Therefore, Clínica do Pêlo
offers its clients a free consultation during which the skin and hair type is evaluated. In this same
session, the most suitable laser type is determined, as well as the number of sessions and intervals
that are most appropriate, in order to ensure maximum effectiveness and safety.
All clients are fully informed about the benefits of laser hair removal.
Laser hair removal is recommended for women of all ages. The most effective typology for laser
hair removal is the combination of light skin and dark hair. However, with the latest technology
used at Clínica do Pêlo, we can remove hair from darker or black skin. Therefore, it is
recommended to have a free consultation with our technicians, in order to determine the most
effective and safest treatment.

Skin phototypes
During laser hair removal, it is normal to feel a slight sensitivity to the heat emitted by the laser.
After the hair removal session, it is common for erythema or redness to appear in the treated area.
This erythema may persist after the session. All these effects are normal in the laser hair removal
procedure.
99% of women are satisfied with the success of the treatments performed at Clínica do Pêlo.
The number of sessions varies according to the characteristics of each client’s skin
and hair. Depending on the area, an average of 6 to 8 sessions are required, though they may exceed
this number. Maintenance sessions may also be necessary. The interval between sessions varies
from one month to six months. In order to clarify any doubts, all clients are entitled to a free
consultation.
At Clínica do Pêlo, we offer free preliminary consultations. In this consultation, the hair and skin
phototype is evaluated so that our specialist technicians can operate with the most suitable laser for
the client’s phototype, maximising the success of the treatment in complete safety. Clínica do Pêlo
uses advanced North American technology approved by the FDA and CE for hair removal
treatment.
All technicians receive continuous specialized training in laser hair removal, which
allows them to operate in a more effective and safe manner.
During laser hair removal, the client feels a slight burning sensation, depending on their sensitivity
and the area of the body being treated. To improve the client’s comfort, Clínica do Pêlo uses an
ACA (Alex Cool Air) cooling system, a cold air device that acts on the epidermis before and during
treatment. This system makes the treatment painless, maintaining excellent results and providing
maximum comfort during treatment.
Given the precision of the laser and the safety required, any area of the body can be treated, at any
age, and on any type of skin and hair, from the most sensitive and delicate to the darkest.
Each session takes between 5 and 25 minutes.
For example:
- Upper lip: 5 minutes
- Underarms + bikini line: 15 minutes
- Full legs: 25 minutes
The intervals between sessions depend on the type of hair, the area to be treated, and the type of
laser that is applied. However, the usual interval for body and facial areas varies between 6 and 8
weeks. The interval between sessions increases as the treatment progresses and as the hair reduces
and weakens in the depilated area.
Each client has a unique protocol, as each case is different.
Yes, after treatment, the hairs eventually fall out. The incidence of the laser eliminates the hair and,
as such, the expulsion of the hair can take up to three weeks. This entire process is normal after a
laser hair removal session.
If you feel the need, you can shave between sessions. The recommended method is with a razor or
hair removal cream.
Our body has hairs that are in different stages of growth, so during treatment, it is likely that the
laser will not be able to act on all of them at once. Therefore, several sessions will be necessary to
complete the removal treatment. Permanent hair removal doesn’t truly exist, as hair growth is
influenced by hormonal factors, as mentioned above. However, laser is currently the hair removal
technique that provides the most long-lasting and effective results.
Photodepilation encompasses all hair removal systems: laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL).
Behind the terms “photodepilation”, “pulsed light” and “laser hair removal” lie many machines with different technologies.
Pulsed light is often used in centers that offer a variety of treatments, as it is a more versatile machine. On many occasions, it is a ‘multi-purpose’ machine with a low level of investment, therefore being less effective in each of its domains.
There are many offers, at all price points, based on pulsed light technology: in hair salons, gyms, franchises, non-medical centres, devices sold on TV, among others.
There are several types of lasers: Alexandrite, Neodymium-Yag, Ruby, Diode, among others. Each has different uses in the world of dermatology/esthetics.
Among these various existing types of lasers, Alexandrite was created specifically for hair removal, making it our choice and that of most specialised clinics. It is a technology that requires a high investment but is effective.
At Clínica do Pêlo, you will find the latest model of Alexandrite and YAG laser with a 18/20/24 mm Spot diameter (the largest on the market). This reflects the success of the treatment and the lower number of shots needed for the treated area.
Folliculitis is an infection of the hair follicles caused by bacteria that are normally found on women’s skin.
Laser hair removal is recommended because it removes the hairs in cases of folliculitis (ingrown
hairs) and also reduces inflammation.
Hirsutism is defined as the presence of terminal hairs in women in anatomical areas characteristic of
male distribution.
Hirsutism results from the action of circulating androgens (male sex hormones) on the skin.
This action occurs due to the presence and activity of enzymes capable of providing substances with
androgenic properties inside the pilosebaceous follicle.
In order of success, in terms of results and time (or fewer sessions required), here are some body areas:
- Bikini line
- Legs
- Underarms
- Navel line
- Areola
- Forearms
